Buying a Used Car in Essex: 12 Checks to Make Before You Pay
From paperwork to a proper test drive, here are the twelve checks that separate a great used car from an expensive mistake.

Buying a used car well comes down to doing the boring checks properly. Whether you buy from us or anywhere else, run through these twelve before you hand over a penny.
Paperwork
- V5C logbook — confirm the registered keeper and that the details match the car (VIN, engine, colour).
- MOT history — check it free on the government site. Look for recurring advisories and mileage that climbs logically.
- Service history — regular stamps or invoices show the car has been cared for.
- HPI / provenance check — confirm it is not stolen, written off, or on outstanding finance.
The car itself
- Mileage vs condition — a worn steering wheel and pedals on a "low mileage" car is a red flag.
- Panel gaps and paint — uneven gaps or mismatched paint can indicate past accident repair.
- Tyres — even wear and plenty of tread; uneven wear hints at alignment or suspension faults.
- Under the bonnet — no mayonnaise-like residue under the oil cap, no obvious leaks, coolant at the right level.
- Electrics — test every window, the air-con, infotainment, lights and cameras.
On the road
- A proper test drive — at least 15 minutes, including some faster roads. Listen for knocks, feel for vibrations, check the brakes pull up straight and the gearbox is smooth.
- Cold start — start the car from cold if you can; many faults hide once an engine is warm.
The deal
- Get it in writing — price, any warranty, and what is included. A reputable dealer is happy to put it on paper.
Why buy from a dealer?
A private sale is "sold as seen" with little protection. Buying from an established dealer means the car has been prepared and checked, you get consumer rights, and you have someone to go back to. Every car we sell is inspected and presented honestly — and because we also run a workshop, we can keep it healthy long after you drive away.
Browse our current stock or tell us what you are after and we will help you find the right car.
