How to Pass Your MOT First Time: A Southend Driver's Checklist
Nearly a third of MOTs fail on faults you could fix at home in minutes. Run through this checklist before your test and save yourself a retest.

A huge number of MOT failures are for simple, avoidable issues — blown bulbs, worn wipers, low screenwash. Spend ten minutes on this checklist before your test and you dramatically improve your chances of a first-time pass.
Lights (the number one failure)
Walk around the car with the lights on and ask someone to press the brake and indicators.
- Headlights (dip and main beam)
- Sidelights, indicators and hazards
- Brake lights — including the high-level third light
- Number plate lights
- Front and rear fog lights
Bulbs are cheap and most are quick to replace.
Tyres
- Tread must be at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters, all the way around
- Check for cuts, bulges and uneven wear
- Make sure pressures are correct
Uneven wear can also point to alignment or suspension issues worth checking.
Screen, wipers and washers
- No cracks or chips larger than the limits in the driver's line of sight
- Wiper blades that clear the screen without smearing
- Working washers with topped-up screenwash
Under the bonnet & inside
- Top up screenwash and check fluid levels
- Make sure the horn works
- Check the handbrake holds on a slope
- Clear any dashboard warning lights (an illuminated airbag, ABS or engine light can fail you)
Seatbelts and mirrors
- Belts latch, retract and are not frayed
- All required mirrors present and secure
Number plates
- Clean, legible, correctly spaced and not damaged
What you cannot check at home
Brakes, emissions, suspension and steering need testing equipment. If anything feels off — a soft brake pedal, a knock over bumps, a pull to one side — get it looked at before the test so a fail does not become an off-road bill.
Book a combined MOT and service
The smartest move is to combine your MOT with a service. Many advisories (worn pads, perished bushes) get caught and quoted before they become failures, and a serviced car simply passes more easily. Get in touch and we will book you in.
