Winter Car Care in Essex: Protect Your Paint, Battery and Tyres
Cold, wet, salty roads are hard on your car. A little preparation now prevents breakdowns, corrosion and dull, damaged paint by spring.

Essex winters are not arctic, but salt, standing water and cold mornings still take their toll. A few hours of preparation protects your car — and your wallet — through the worst of it.
Protect your paint from road salt
Road salt is corrosive and clings to your bodywork and underside all winter.
- Wash the car more often, including the wheel arches and underside
- Apply protection before winter — a ceramic coating makes salt and grime far easier to rinse off and shields the paint
- Keep on top of stone chips so salt cannot attack bare metal
A protected car comes out of winter looking far better than a neglected one.
Look after your battery
Most winter breakdowns are battery-related. Cold reduces battery capacity just as you demand more from it (lights, heaters, heated screens).
- If your battery is over 4–5 years old, get it tested
- Short journeys do not fully recharge a battery — an occasional longer run helps
- Watch for slow cranking on cold mornings; it is your early warning
Check your tyres
Grip matters most when conditions are worst.
- Ensure plenty of tread (well above the 1.6mm legal minimum — 3mm+ is far safer in the wet)
- Check pressures regularly; cold air lowers them
- Consider all-season tyres if you do a lot of winter miles
Visibility
- Replace tired wiper blades
- Use a winter-strength screenwash that will not freeze
- Keep washer fluid topped up — salt spray from other cars coats your screen fast
Inside and emergency kit
- Check your heater and demister work properly
- Carry a scraper, de-icer, a warm layer and a phone charger
